Use discernment when showing support

The Christian faith is a common theme and hot topic that seems to be touched on by all of the GOP presidential candidates in one way or another.

Most of the candidates have expressed a level of involvement in religion to some extent, whether as a professing Christian or claiming a Protestant association.

Although a candidate’s profession of faith is important when deciding who to support, we cannot stop evaluating there. It is important to consider these claims in light of the candidates’ stance on current issues, such as abortion or gay marriage.

Candidate Ted Cruz said that it is important for politicians to “avoid being a Pharisee” with their claims of faith and to not use faith only for political gain.

While we cannot judge someone’s heart, it is important to evaluate the candidates’ “fruit,” or outward expressions of their hearts.

As Christians, we are called to use discernment in our actions and decisions. When considering candidates, take time to ask yourself if their values reflect those of a biblical worldview. Do their proclaimed beliefs match their established stances?

Ask God for wisdom in deciding who to support during the nominee race. Evaluate carefully each candidate you consider a possibility and see if their values truly align with the Gospel.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5 KJV).
