Greenville Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, 8 p.m., Peace Center
You don’t have to be a classical music aficionado to enjoy a slice of historical American culture and a trip to downtown Greenville. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra begins its season Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Peace Center with “Made in America,” a concert featuring works by Bernstein, Gershwin and Rachmaninoff.
Guest pianist Gabriela Martinez will perform Gershwin’s flamboyant “Piano Concerto in F Major,” the highlight of the concert. To obtain $10 student tickets (subject to availability), a valid student ID must be presented in person at the Peace Center box office.
Missions Advance
Monday, 9 p.m., AL 115
On Monday, Missions Advance will be hosting its kickoff event of the semester. Beginning at 9 p.m. in AL 115, the organization will present this semester’s theme: “Go to the Hard Places.” Closed countries in which giving the Gospel is particularly challenging will be highlighted each week. Missions Advance plans to hold weekly meetings in AL 115 Thursday nights at 6 p.m. Meetings usually begin with a guest speaker and end in group prayer. The goal of Missions Advance is to spend time in prayer and learn about and mobilize missions. Directors Craig Brunson, a senior youth ministries major, and Courtney Souza, a senior women’s ministries major, believe in the power of prayer and in finding ways for students to contribute with their specific abilities. “We know there are students all around campus who are passionate about the spread of the Gospel, whether it’s here or abroad,” Craig said. The directors have exciting new ideas for the upcoming year, including the showing of mission films and possibly a mission trip to Atlanta, Ga. “We are really targeting people with a passion for missions, not necessarily missions majors,” Courtney said.
