This Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m., David Kim, concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, will return to Bob Jones University and perform solo alongside the BJU Symphony Orchestra, performing Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” as part of BJU’s Concert, Opera and Drama Series.
Kim’s connection to BJU dates back decades. His first performance on campus was with his mother when he was a child prodigy. After becoming the concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, he wished to return. 12 years ago, he contacted Dr. Michael Moore, division chair of music, asking to perform on campus again. Since then, he has been thoroughly involved in the music program: teaching music students, performing in every concert hall on campus and collaborating on CDs.
“We’ve done so much together, I just feel like part of the family,” Kim said.
For this artist series, Kim is eager to bring classical music back to the “ordinary” person. He hopes that the audience “comes away thinking it was wonderful.”
The program will also feature performances by the 2025 Concerto Aria winners: violinist Elizabeth Dorey with a concerto by Saint Saens, cellist Ben Hyink with a concerto by Shostakovich, pianist Sophia Tzitzikas with a concerto by Gershwin, and tenor Michael Adams performing two arias by Puccini. These students are excited to work with their classmates and share their artistry with the community through classical music.
“I want the audience to walk away with almost tears because it’s so gorgeous,” Dorey said.
