“Cyrano de Bergerac” is a French tale written by Edmond Rostand. Don’t worry if you can’t understand French—Bob Jones University will be performing the Brian Hooker translation.
“Cyrano” follows the story of a man with an unusually large nose who covets a romance with his distant cousin, Roxane. Cyrano assists his attractive friend Christian in writing letters to and winning the love of Roxane.
As the University’s Showpass page puts it, “Cyrano de Bergerac” is a “swashbuckling tale of romance, bravery, and virtue!”
We reached out to the Fine Arts Artistic Director, Mr. David Schwingle, to ask him what value this production holds for the student body.
He answered, “the performing arts events extend the classroom. More, they are a classroom in and of themselves. They are a precious form of knowledge. They train the mind, heart, and soul in a particular direction: toward the good, the true, and the beautiful.”
Furthermore, Mr. Schwingle noted that “the performing arts nourish students culturally, morally, and ethically; they train students not just to recognize truth, but to love it.”
Ever since BJU was founded in 1927, it has emphasized the fine arts. The Concert, Opera and Drama Series, or Artist Series, have been flourishing with the involvement of students for nearly 100 years.
“Cyrano de Bergerac” is no different. This production is a product of the hard work of many people, including BJU students.
When attending this Artist Series show, viewers can celebrate a University history of rich fine arts with a culmination of many hours of work by the BJU community to produce an enjoyable evening filled with an exciting tale.
As Mr. Schwingle put it, “Cyrano allows us to cheer for a hero who, while imperfect, sacrifices his own desires to serve others.”
“Cyrano de Bergerac” will be performed in Rodeheaver Auditorium at 7:30pm on November 19, 20 and 21. Tickets are available on Showpass.
