Bob Jones University kicked off its intramural soccer season on Friday night with its second annual pre-season Soccer Jamboree, a friendly yet competitive event aimed at uniting students from various societies for an evening of spirited fellowship and athleticism.
This marks the second consecutive year that BJU has hosted the society Soccer Jamboree. The event serves as both a pre-season warm-up and a means to foster camaraderie among students. It provides a platform for societies to showcase their skills and promote their spirit while glorifying God on the field.
The Jamboree attracted a large crowd, with the bleachers at the main field filled and the sidelines of the lower fields bustling with enthusiastic supporters who came prepared with signs and energy. The atmosphere was energetic, showcasing just how much society soccer means to the student body. With the Jamboree marking the return of the season, students expressed their enthusiasm and anticipation for the games ahead. The players represented their societies proudly, which created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
Ryan McCarty, the university’s society sports director and assistant men’s soccer coach, reflected on the purpose of the Jamboree and how it has evolved since last year.
“The theme this year that our athletic directors have chosen is competing for an imperishable crown,” McCarty said. “When we play, we’re not just playing for the win, we’re competing in a way that hopefully is reflecting on how great our God is.”
McCarty also shared his favorite aspect of the event: “The games bring people together,” emphasizing the sense of community the Jamboree fosters. However, McCarty noted that Hurricane Helene had a significant impact on this year’s event. The event didn’t have food trucks or the men’s 7’s games, which were prominent features in the previous Jamboree.
As the Jamboree progressed, several society coaches shared their thoughts and opinions on the Jamboree as well.
“I love seeing everyone come out and support societies,” Lauren Elwart, coach of the Theta Alph Chi Owls, said about the event.
While many coaches emphasized the importance of competition and practice during the Jamboree, a common theme emerged: the chance to reflect Christ’s love on the field. This spiritual focus is what excites players and coaches most about the season ahead.
