Bob Jones University men’s soccer team beat Pensacola Christian College in a 1-0 win during the match on Oct 1 at 7 p.m.
The game began right on time as the stadium rapidly filled with supporters, mainly from BJU. Faculty and students cheered during both halves of the game waiting expectantly for the first goal, which came as an “own goal” about midway through the second half after a corner kick by midfielder Peter Waddy. The crowd stood up in excitement, as the team was able to mark one point on the scoreboard after several unsuccessful attempts.
In the remaining 26 minutes, both teams tried to score goals but were unable hit the back of the net. and at the end of the second half the Bruins men’s soccer team celebrated BJU’s victory along with the crowd. Although happy with the win, head coach Greg Fulton said the team could have done better. “It was an ugly one, but it was a win. We love that, but we’ve got to get better, we’ve got to grow,” Fulton said.
The team needs to work on some strategies, said Fulton. “We’ve got to improve our finishing; it’s definitely got to be better,” Fulton said. “Ultimately, we’ve got to be able to score goals and those movements, we’re not always going to have that many opportunities, so finishing is going to be a big part of it.” The Bruins attempted 10 shots on goal while the Eagles took two shots on goal.
Ian Arendse, captain of the team, said that despite the win, the team still needs to grow in a few areas. “Just keeping possession and order under pressure is the big thing,” Arendse said. The team will continue to work hard, as they have done until now, “practicing every day since August 7.”
Up next, the Bruins men’s soccer team will be playing Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. as part of the Homecoming Week schedule. Midfielder Mario Figuroa said the team is looking forward to the game. “For the next game, we’re just going to go pumped.”
Faculty, students and alumni will enjoy the game against Regent University as the closing activity of both Spirit Week and Homecoming Weekend. Spectators are invited to stay at the stadium for a firework display after the game.
