The Bob Jones University Public Policy Organization announced it is hosting a watch party for the second live 2024 presidential debate. The PPO is a student-run organization with the goal of informing students about public policy and equipping them to be engaged in public policy processes. The organization meets to have debates and discussions regarding public policy and politics.
All BJU students are welcome to join the watch party at any time from 9-10:30 p.m., Sept. 10, in The Den.
After a turbulent political season that saw President Joe Biden stepping out of the 2024 presidential race, the Democratic Party announced their new nominee: Vice President Kamala Harris. She announced her debate with the Republican Party’s candidate, former president Donald Trump, will take place 9 p.m., Sept. 10, in Philadelphia and will be broadcast on ABC News. This is the first time that Harris will be debating Trump in the campaign. According to the PPO, it is an event well worth the watch.
“As Americans, it is our duty to be educated citizens so that we can make the best decisions for ourselves when it comes to Election Day,” PPO President Noah Price said. “This year’s election between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is a race that will change history, and it is our calling to be involved with this process as Americans.”
Both candidates have been the subject of intense criticism from various sides of the political spectrum over the past few months, and the candidates will be asked to address important questions on policy during the debate. The way these questions are answered could very well change the direction of the election.
While the debate itself is expected to be tense, Price wants the PPO’s watch party to be enjoyable and casual. Light refreshments will be provided for students as they fellowship with one another while watching the debate.
“This is a come-as-you-can event, in that feel free to come for as long as you can stay,” Price wrote in an emailed response to questions. “We understand everyone is busy, we just desire to provide a fun and relaxing way to watch this momentous event!”
Whether students want to stay informed on the current political climate, or they simply have a fascination with American politics, the PPO welcomes them to attend the debate watch party.
