Patriots hold off Royals in 20-point-deficit victory

The Beta Gamma Delta Patriots took on the Pi Gamma Delta Royals last Friday night, and the Patriots handed the Royals their third straight loss and an even 4-4 record. Beta’s strong defense, ranked third in the National League, allowed only 30 points in the 50-30 win.

It didn’t take the Patriots long to find their rhythm, as they quickly led 18-6. Pi Gamma sophomore Ryan Hwang tried to keep up with the quickly paced Beta offense, and after an impressive 3-point play, Pi Gamma was able to close the gap to eight points at 20-12. Shortly after another Beta score, senior Patriot Mark Sterr found the basket to put the Patriots up 24-12 with five minutes left in the half. But Hwang answered right back, driving through the lane once again to keep the Royals within 10 points.

The second half started with Beta’s Sterr powering his way down low for an easy two points. The Royals’ Hwang, still trying to propel his struggling team forward, drove through the lane and drew two free throws. Beta then took advantage of a four-minute Pi Gamma scoring drought and jumped out to a 37-20 lead. Pi Gamma freshman Stephen Laird ended the drought by maneuvering his way under the basket and laying in two points.

It was almost four minutes before Pi Gamma scored again; Beta’s strong defense made it tough for the Royals to find open shots, and Sterr continued to close down the lane. The Patriots also caused several Pi Gamma turnovers and capitalized by taking a commanding 42-22 lead.

Despite Hwang’s best efforts, the final score landed at 50-30, and the Patriots advanced to a record of 6-2.
