Last week the Bruins women’s basketball team picked up a dominating win over Wesleyan College and suffered a hard defeat, falling to Montreat College.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, the Bruins traveled to Macon, Ga., to take on the Wesleyan College Wolves. The Wolves began their season 0-3 and were hoping to earn their first win against the Bruins. BJU was playing for its second win in a row.

The game began with hustle and determination from both sides. Junior Kourtney Hoefler and sophomore Kendra Jeffcott dominated the boards and gave the Bruins multiple second chances, but the Bruins executed several shots from the perimeter as well as from the paint. The Bruins were not satisfied with their 30-22 lead and went on a 15-4 scoring run.

The Wolves, rejuvenated after halftime, made a run at the beginning of the second half. But it was not enough, and the Bruins offense continued to roll. Coming off the bench, freshman Brianna Delaney made a big contribution to the strong offensive presence of the Bruins as she added 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Jeffcott, Maggi Ford, Kim Spiecker and Delaney each scored in the double digits as the Bruins defeated the Wolves 80-56.

On Saturday Nov. 23, the Bruins traveled to Montreat, N.C., to wrap up their four-game road trip. The Bruins were looking to improve to an impressive 7-2 record as they took on the Cavaliers, but Montreat College dominated the game from the opening tip. The Bruins tried to slow down Montreat’s offensive to little-to-no avail, and the Cavaliers secured a 12-2 lead.

The Cavaliers dominated the paint and shot a remarkable 78 percent from the field in the first half. The offensive firepower, coupled with stifling defense, led to an eventual 91-56 Montreat win. The Bruins shot only 32 percent from field-goal range against the Cavaliers’ 61 percent, and Montreat tallied 25 points from turnovers compared to the Bruins’ seven.
