Men’s soccer season finishes strong with blowout 9-0 victory

The Bruins men’s soccer team capped off their spectacular end-of-the-season run by adding their fifth win in a row on Saturday, Nov. 2, against Chowan University. Struggling Chowan University entered the game with a 1–13 record, while the Bruins held a 9–6–1 record.

As the first half progressed, the Bruins dictated possession and controlled the flow of the game. Sophomore Matt Moore quickly added two goals in the first half and propelled his team into the break.

Leading 2–0, the Bruins were eager to create more scoring opportunities. The Bruins played with passion throughout the second half of their final regular season game, continuously ripping shots at the opposing keeper and continuing to direct play. Senior Stephen Lovelace increased the lead to 3–0 early in the second half, junior Ethan Pegram tallied two goals on the game, and freshman John Wilson and junior Ben Sexton each added a goal. Moore added two more goals before the score fest was over, ending the game with a solid 9–0 score in the Bruins’ favor. Junior goalkeeper Joseph Wooster and the Bruins defense earned the season’s sixth clean sheet.

The Bruins flirted with a .500 record for the majority of the first half of the season, but geared up and finished exceptionally strong. With their five-game winning streak to close the season, the Bruins will enter the playoffs with a commendable 10–6–1 record. The team will play Emmanuel College next week to begin the regional tournament.
