Fort Lupton, Colo.: An American has set a new deadlift record en route to winning the 2013 World’s Strongest Man Competition. Brian Shaw, of Fort Lupton, Colo., deadlifted 975 pounds to set the new record last week. Deadlifting isn’t his only strong suit: Shaw’s bench is 525 pounds and his squat is 800 pounds.

Denver, Colo.: In case you haven’t heard, Peyton Manning has tied the NFL record for most touchdown passes in a game, with seven in last week’s Broncos victory over the Baltimore Ravens. He has one Super Bowl ring while his brother Eli has two. . .go figure.

New York City, N. Y.: Despite an early slump in play against Victoria Azarenka, American women’s tennis star Serena Williams once again held on to win at last Sunday’s U.S. Open. The 32-year-old Williams now holds 17 Grand Slam singles wins and is ranked No.1 in the world.
