The University Singers choir, or U-Singers, has been a staple freshman year experience at Bob Jones University since 2003, when it became the freshmen choir. Many fondly remember the upbeat rehearsals and Sunday morning trips to sing at various churches in the greater Greenville area. U-Singers would not be what it is without director Dr. Pattye Casarow and accompanist Dr. Kenon Renfrow, who U-Singers know as Dr. C and Dr. Frow. The choir has its own slogan: “Once a U-Singer, always a U-Singer.” This mindset cultivates an enduring community among past and present U-Singers.

However, effective next school year, the University Singers will be open to more than just freshmen. Students from any classification are invited to audition for all choirs and then will be placed in the choir that best suits their vocal level. University Singers is intended as a low-pressure environment, particularly for those interested in honing their musical talents for the ministry.
Dr. Casarow has directed the University Singers for 10 years, and she says that this redesign is “a win-win in my book!” Not only is there now a broader range of participants available, but the University Singers provides a lower concert commitment—particularly appealing to those with heavy class schedules.
“Our mission has always been to train singers who will serve as church music leaders for the next 50 years, and this redesign strengthens that mission,” Dr. Casarow said.
Dr. Renfrow, who has accompanied the University Singers for 20 years, is also positive about the change.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the freshmen University Singers with all my heart, but I am excited for what God has for this next chapter,” Dr. Renfrow said.
The rehearsal schedule will remain the same: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:35 a.m.-12:35 p.m. For U-Singers, involvement in all-choir performances such as “The Messiah” will now be voluntary to accommodate those with busier schedules. This change seeks to expand the choir’s capabilities with more members and to continue training students for church ministry. Past U-Singers are encouraged to return to the choir. And now, “Once a U-Singer, always a U-Singer” will be extended to even more students at BJU.
