BJU rallies in prayer after death of student

BJU held events to remember freshman Andres Lopez after his death Wednesday night.

After the sudden death, Feb. 21, of Jose Andres Lopez Bono, 18, a freshman kinesiology major from Honduras, the Bob Jones University community rallied in prayer.

“Andres was an active member of the campus community, especially the international community,” BJU’s acting CEO Alan Benson said. “He was a member of the Nu Delta Chi Vikings and well-loved by the students who knew him.”

Lopez died from an apparent cardiac event, according to a university announcement. BJU lowered its flags to half-staff in honor of Lopez, and the family held a visitation, Feb. 24, in Greenville. Benson announced plans to share more about Lopez in chapel at 11 a.m., Monday.

A fundraiser sponsored by the International Student Organization and Lopez’ society, the Nu Delta Chi Vikings, to help with the family’s funeral and travel expenses had raised more than $12,500 on GoFundMe by Saturday afternoon.
